The Great Florida Property Tax Robbery: Why "Reform" is a Trap
They are robbing you. Right now. As you read these words, local governments across the Sunshine State are treating your home like a private ATM. In just the last three years, property tax levies in Florida have surged by nearly 40 percent. Over the last decade, that number has doubled to a staggering $60 billion annually.
The politicians will tell you it’s just "the market." They’ll claim they need the revenue for essential services. But take a look around. Are your roads twice as smooth? Is your neighborhood twice as safe? The reality is that you are being forced to pay perpetual rent to the government on a property you already own. We are halfway through the 2026 Legislative Session, and the window to stop this systemic fraud is closing.
Exposing the Half-Measures: The Truth About HJR 201
You may have heard buzz about HJR 201 being the "lead" plan for tax relief. Let’s set the record straight: HJR 201 is a disgrace. It is a half-measure designed to make you feel like you’ve won while keeping the government’s hand firmly in your pocket.
Governor DeSantis has been on national television talking about "eliminating" property taxes, but the fine print of HJR 201 tells a different story. This bill carves out school taxes, which account for roughly 45% of your total bill. If your tax bill is $6,000, HJR 201 "generously" lets you keep paying $2,700 a year. Forever. You aren't a homeowner under this plan; you're just a renter who negotiated a slightly better lease with the state.
The Poison Pill: Beware the 5% Exit Fee
When the public started demanding total elimination, the politicians finally introduced HJR 787 and HB 791. But they couldn't help themselves, they tucked a poison pill inside. These bills suggest total homestead elimination but pair it with a 5% "exit fee" on real estate transactions.
Think about the math. If you sell a $400,000 home, the state wants $20,000 off the top. That isn't for your realtor or your closing costs; that is a straight tax to the state on your way out the door. These bills are "Dead on Arrival" by design. They are a setup to make total elimination look impossible, while the politicians continue to play Monopoly with your equity.
Exposing the Waste: The Math They Fear
The lobbyists claim the sky will fall if we cut these taxes. They say the state "can't afford" to let you own your home outright. They are lying.
CFO Blaise Ingoglia and the "DOGE" audits have investigated only 13 local governments so far. In those 13 spots alone, they found $1.97 billion in excessive, wasteful spending. If we extrapolate those findings across Florida’s 67 counties, we are looking at an estimated $10.1 billion in pure waste. Add in the 400-plus cities, and we easily hit the $18.3 billion mark, which is exactly what the state says it would cost to eliminate all non-school homestead taxes. The money is there; it's just being spent on "poet laureates" and "sustainability vanity projects" instead of your freedom.
The 28-Day Countdown
We are T-minus 28 days from the end of the session. While the House moves "milquetoast" plans, the Senate has become a graveyard. Senate President Ben Albritton says he is "measuring a lot," which is politician-speak for waiting for the clock to run out on March 13th.
We need a champion. We need a legislator brave enough to file the "Zero Rent" bill, 100% homestead elimination with no exit fees and no sales tax hikes. We are building a database of every vote and every stall. This isn't a bumper sticker movement; it’s a reckoning.
